The Black Hills Spruce was named the official tree of South Dakota in 1947. The Black Hills Spruce is one of the dominant trees of the boreal forest that reaches the northeastern United States across Canada to Alaska. Many felt the Cottonwood or Juniper tree would e a better choice for the state tree, but the Black Hills Spruce won out.
